Northeast Aegean Island Travel Guide

The Northeast Aegean Sea includes the Islands of Lesbos (also referred to as Mytilene, the name of its capital, Thasos, Samothrace, Chios and others. Most are located along the Turkish Coast.

The islands in this section of the Aegean are quite distanced from each other and the sea area between them is very large. They are grouped primarily for administration and governing purposes.

The major islands along the Turkish coast are Lesbos, Limnos, Ikaria, Chios, and Samos. The major islands on the coast of Thrace and Eastern Macedonia in Northern Greece are Thasos and Samothrace.

The natural beauty of all these islands, combined with crystal clear and green waters, dense forests, mountains and hundreds of kilometers coastline are ideal for spending some quiet holidays in pretty remote areas.

As with most inhabited Greek islands, the Northeast Aegean island have been inhabited since ancient times and boast a diverse cultural legacy.
