Ionian Sea Islands Travel Guide

The Ionian Sea forms the sea border between Greece and southeast Italy. All islands have been inhabited for centuries and all have their unique history and culture.

Corfu or Kerkyra is perhaps the most famous island, located at the north of the Ionian sea.

Zante or Zakynthos is the second most popular tourist destination, particularly among English and German speaking visitors.

The island of Ithaka is the most famous island primarily from Homer's Odyssey and Iliad poems and Odysseus, the famous hero in the poems, during the 8th to 6th centuries BC.

The Ionian Sea is located south from the Adriatic Sea and is the area with the biggest depth in the whole of the Mediterranean - 4,900 meters deep - and you can charter a boat from Italy or take a ferry from Ancona, Brindisi, and other major Italian ports.

The natural beauty of the environment of the Ionian Sea offer stunning scenes, especially on boat, while the islands also offer some beautiful sports and sea accessible beaches.
